Imagine buying a new car and finding out later that it was actually assembled in the back shop of the dealer, not the factory, and that no one had ever tested the car. Pool tables are just like that. They are completely assembled by the dealer. The performance of the pool table depends heavily on the quality of the assembly or installation as well as the engineering and design and materials in that table. Scary, right! I mean that the table's performance is something they think you are not smart enough to identify. Some pool tables today are potentially better than we have ever seen. NOTE: SOME are! Just because a table is made in America doesn't assure you of quality. Far from it! American made pool tables have had lots of issues for a very long time, and that continues to be the case. Even custom built or hand built tables suffer in this regard. In fact, bad quality tables were INVENTED in America. Until consumers wise up and demand better products, this problem will continue. It just about puts me into tears when I think about all the people who buy pool tables every single day of the year and end up with a table that could never deliver the quality of play expected. Bad tables are all over the market. Some are really expensive and most are not. I've seen horrible tables with price tags in the tens of thousands of dollars. I've also seen great tables at a fraction of that. To enjoy your new table, it has to deliver a certain level of performance. Do you know how to measure the performance of a pool table? Chances are 95% against you if you think you do! Even with a world class player measuring the performance of a given table, it's likely that that world class player will not be able to tell you WHY it plays so poorly. I can and you may be able to as well after reading this book. Consider yourself fortunate that you have found this resource!
Why are so many tables in the market today nothing more than junk? Because many makers of pool tables don't understand how to build them and also don't want to take the time to learn. In reality, a great playing table seldom costs much more than one that isn't worth your time. Besides, making a product cheap seems to be the American Way. But, potentially, pool tables could last a lifetime as they did 100 years ago, not just 2 days beyond the warranty expiration date. If built correctly they should play as well as any ever have. They should be level and have a predictable bounce off the rail. That means bank shot performance. THAT'S THE GAME and, without that, you have nothing and have wasted all your money. Some of the best pool tables are not anywhere near the high price point. Some of the worst CAN be. PRICE DOES NOT INSURE QUALITY! The style of the furniture and color of the wood or cloth has very little to do with this subject. In fact, it has nothing to do with it. Those choices are yours and yours alone. Perhaps I should have titled this guide as "A Consumer Warning" rather than Pool Tables 101! It certainly is, but it is also going to teach you what you absolutely NEED to know before you go out to shop for that once-in-a-lifetime pool table. Let me offer you an example, in the news recently, that exemplifies how poor quality of a product happens at all price points.
The news was full of stories about which cars are most sought after by Americans right now. Amazingly, the Mercedes C class was listed as the number 2 choice for Americans. Well folks, I'm a car buff, a past Mercedes owner of several of those cars and a student of reliability in cars. The C Class Mercedes has one of the worst, if not THE worst, history of reliability according to Consumer Reports. It's also one of their top selling models. So, how is it so high on the desired car list? Simple! Because people just don't take the time to learn about products before they part with their hard earned cash. We've all done that and learned later what foolishness that was. I am sure that at least half the population of the world would rather go through life with their eyes closed avoiding truths that could change their lives for the better. It's been proven time and time again. It's the reason Pool Tables 101 was written. I can't change the world of pool table buyers, but I can help you avoid a purchase of what is suppose to be a once-in-lifetime purchase of a luxury durable goods item. As a side note, I suppose you are wondering how a car like a Mercedes could get such a bad rap! In a word - Greed! In an effort to make Mercedes cars less expensive to build and to satisfy the greater need in the market for them, Mercedes of Germany, a number of years ago, decided to cut quality corners and engineering corners in favor of cost. Now they are trying to fix the problem they created. From the beginning through the 80's, their vehicles were truly outstanding from so many points of view. But today, they have about the worst reliability ratings going and getting them serviced by the dealer may take weeks to set an appointment, because so many are in for repair. Waiting for several weeks to get your Mercedes serviced at the dealer is the norm, not the exception.
Not all pool table buyer's guides are equal. "You get what you pay for!" If the advice you receive is free, consider it's worth no more than you paid for it. Everyone has FREE advice for you either in print or otherwise. In my 67 years I have found that free advice is pretty much worthless. With precious few exceptions, free has always translated to worthless and if I followed that free advice, I made a big mistake that usually cost me money or, should I say, wasted my money. In addition, a great amount of paid-for advice fell into the same category. It seems a lot of people today call themselves experts and in reality don't have a clue, but they will charge you for their ignorance anyway. This book was born out of a desire to set the facts straight for you, the consumer. After 20 years in the retail business of selling and marketing these products, the painful truth about the knowledge level of all those customers is the motivation for this book. None of them had any idea what they should have known prior to coming into my stores. I do mean NONE. Amazing isn't it? My staff was trained to teach our customers so that they could make an informed decision. "Be prepared with knowledge and then go shopping." Not surprisingly, many consumers don't want to take the time to learn and appear to enjoy wasting their money in the experiment. How does that old saying go? "There's a sucker born every minute?"
