Pinup can be hard, You have to know all the details that make a pinup image. It isn't one piece of clothing, or one hairstyle that makes an image pinup, its a combination of all of these things.
Actually it is more than that, before you select clothing or talk to your MUA, you need to have a concept. Pinup is all about concept.
Once you have the concept, then the framing of the image - what's in it and what's happening - flows naturally. Only when you know what your concept is, can you start thinking of actual details, like clothing, makeup, hairstyle, set, lighting, and props.

I had to learn it the hard way
Trial and error sounds sexy when you aren't doing it. You'd think doing something over and over when it involves beautiful models would be fun, but it almost burned me out on photography completely.
When I finished my first calendar full of pinup style images, I was worn out. I'd led a team of 3 people, directed 4 different MUAs and shot 14 models, every weekend for two months. Matter of fact I missed two days of work with a nervous breakdown.
But I also produced some of my best work ever.
What's the best way to learn photography?
The best way is to have an experienced photographer as an assistant and work with professional models and makeup artists. Unfortunately most of us don't have those resources.
The next best way to learn is live at a workshop.

In May of 2006, I taught a workshop called "Conceptual Images" where I focused on creating a pinup image from concept to post production. There were 12 photographers who came to that workshop and learned how to build a set and shoot with multiple light set ups. I wish I'd recorded that workshop.
October of 2008, I got the chance to teach pinup again. This time I learned from my previous workshop - which was good, but anything can be improved. On Oct 13 and 14th, at my studio in downtown Houston, I taught the new version of my workshop. A select few - one of whom traveled over 1,300 miles to be there - got to listen to me teach and shoot pinup with me for two days.

Where's the pinup photography instruction?
There is a lot of really good pinup out there.
And a lot of really, really bad pinup.
But no one seems to be teaching it. I looked around the internet and couldn't find a single course on how to do pinup photography.

The Book Is More Than A Transcript
I had the book transcribed so readers could read it.
But I couldn't.
Guess what? I don't talk the way I write.
I ended up editing the whole thing into a coherent book. Then I got a copy editor with like a PhD in English Rhetoric and stuff, to go over it as well. She cleaned it up even more.
